CURRENT FUND RAISING PROJECTS

MADRE DE DIOS PROJECT

As you might know this is a temporary residence for young girls, women and young  children who are extremely poor and living on the street or at risk and want to make a better life for themselves.  Most of them have been physically or sexually abused and/or abandoned by their husband/family. Many are pregnant young girls. During their residence here they are provided individual counseling, orientation and academic tutoring as well as formal education.  The women and older girls are helped to develop a plan for becoming independent.  The facility is in need of a social worker to assist the women in the normalization their lives.  This may involve helping securing identity cards, dealing with court cases regarding their abusers and dealing with the authorities when the girls have been placed in the home by a government agency.  Friends of Amanecer Canada is attempting to raise money to pay for a professional social worker to work with the traumatized and emotionally scared girls and women needing help with the normalization process. If you would like to contribute or know someone who would, please Jan Walsh in Victoria at 250-658-1881 or jb.walsh@shaw.ca.

SALOMON KLEIN PROJECT

As you may know this is the facility that accepts orphans, abandoned children and children at risk between birth and six years of age. Many have been mistreated physically, mentally or otherwise. The attention provided to the infants includes intense stimulation as well as other primary care activities. The facility currently has 40 infants under the age of 8 months who need enriched milk to combat malnutrition. This facility is understaffed again due to budge constraints and there is a great need for more caregivers.  Many children do not receive sufficient human contact to ensure healthy development.  Many volunteers are directed there but more regular staff are required.  Friends of Amanecer Canada is attempting to raise money for the salaries of two caregivers.  If you would like to help with this project or know someone who would please contact Sherri Hohert at 250-658-5891 or sherrih@telus.net.
